Two sections of two separate Metro lines will close this weekend, affecting thousands of commuters on the Red and Blue lines.

The biggest issue will be on the Red Line. There will be no service between the Rockville and Bethesda stations. That will close the Twinbrook, White Flint, Grosvenor-Strathmore, and Medical Center stations. The closure begins at 10:00pm Friday (August 5) and will last through Sunday night. Regular service should be restored for the Monday morning commute (August 8).

Metro will operate free shuttle buses between all of the affected stations. There will also be an express shuttle bus operating between the Rockville and Bethesda. Riders should add about 45 minutes to get through the closure. Red line service will operate normally between Bethesda, downtown Washington, and Glenmont.

Metro says the closure is needed to do some important maintenance and safety work.  According to its website, the transit agency will “install new rail, repair tunnel leaks, replace ties and fasteners, install new communications cables to enhance cell phone coverage, and conduct preventive maintenance on 23 elevators and 10 escalators.”

A section of the Blue Line will also be closed for part of the weekend. There will be no train service Sunday, August 7 between the Franconia-Springfield, Van Dorn Street, and King Street stations. The closure will be in effect all day Sunday.

Metro will operate free shuttles from the Franconia-Springfield and Van Dorn Street stations to the Eisenhower Avenue station on the Yellow Line. Commuters should add on 30 minutes to their travel time. Blue line trains will depart from the Huntington station on their way through Northern Virginia, the District, and on to the Largo Town Center station.

The Blue Line issue is not due to Metro. The Virginia Department of Transportation is doing work on the Telegraph Road bridge near the King Street station. In order to allow VDOT to do its work safely, Metro will not be able to run trains along the southern end of the Blue Line near the bridge.

Customers on the eastern ends of the Blue and Orange Lines will have to deal with a slow down due to single-tracking. Trains will share the same track between Eastern Market and Stadium-Armory. The single-tracking begins Friday night at 10:00 and goes through Sunday. Metro is telling customers to add 20 minutes of travel time.

Breaking News: Man Responsible For Slashing Women in Malls, Northern VA | News

UPDATED (7.26)

FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA) — A man is following young women in Northern Virginia retail stores, slashing them with a blade, then “slipping away,” police said.

The latest reported incident happened at the Fair Oaks Mall, in the “Forever 21” store Monday, at around 5:30 p.m., police said.

“The 18-year-old victim was shopping when she noticed clothes that had fallen off of a rack behind her and saw a man bending down to pick them up,” police said.

The victim felt a sharp pain and thought a hanger had struck her in the backside, police said.

“A short time later, she discovered her denim shorts had been slashed; her buttocks had been cut and were bleeding,” Fairfax County Police said in a news release.

Police say four other similar attacks have taken place in Fairfax County in retail stores since February.

There was an incident at the Marshall’s store in the Greenbriar Shopping Center on June 20th at around 2:45 p.m., police said.

The victims are all either teenaged women or in their early 20’s.

“The suspect is described as hispanic, late 20’s, around 5 feet 6 inches tall and heavy-set. He wore white shorts and a short-sleeved shirt in the July 25 assault,” police said.

One man may be responsible for stabbing at least five women in the butt, according to Fairfax County police.

In the most recent attack, a woman in her early 20s was shopping at Forever 21 inside the Fair Oaks Mall at 5:30 p.m. Monday when she was distracted by clothing falling over. Then suddenly she felt a sharp pain in her butt and realized she’d been stabbed through her jeans.

The atttacks began in February. In each attack, the victims have been women in their late teens or early 20s at retail stores, but not always at malls. In each case, the stabbing follows some sort of distraction.

Four attacks have been reported in the Fair Oaks area and one in McLean.

Bishop O’Connell Football Coach Died Monday | News

(via @WUSA9)

(WUSA) — Steve Trimble, 53, the head football coach at Bishop O’Connell High School died Monday on the Arlington, Va. campus.

A statement released by Athletic Director Joe Wootten:

“Steve Trimble was a man of the impeccable integrity.  Our community is in shock at his untimely passing.  He will be missed in more ways then one.  His players learned not only football but life lessons from him.  An example of this was displayed when our football team would be on the practice field and a soccer game was about to begin.  When the national anthem was played before the game he would have this team stand at attention and remove their helmets.  This small gesture was typical Steve Trimble, humbly do what is right and show respect to all.  Our heart felt prayers go out to his wife Gretchen and their four boys:  Jeremy, Jordan, Justin and Joshua.”

Last year, Trimble led the Knights to a 3-7 record.  This week’s football summer practices have been postponed until July 18.
